The engine manufacturer MISTRAL Engines is in full expansion despite the harsh economic climate. To lead the company into industrialisation MISTRAL's Board has instilled fresh dynamics with the nomination of a CEO last autumn. He is specialized in the set up and management of industrial innovations within the realm of new market ventures.

MISTRAL's technology is now more than ever topical, providing a response and a responsible solution to the environmental, social and economic challenges of 21st Century General Aviation.

After eight years of development, and certification just one footstep away, MISTRAL’s aim to become the global supplier of rotary engines for General Aviation is on the verge of becoming reality. MISTRAL’s rotary engines bridge the gap between piston and turbine engines, taking the best of each. They have a unique set of advantages that allows them to meet the three crucial aspects of sustainable development, as well as each and every pilot’s concerns:

Environmental respect: they accept unleaded mogas as well as avgas and mixtures thereof; fuel consumption is optimized in all flight phases thanks to a fully redundant electronically-controlled Digital Engine Management (DEM) system.

Social respect: rotary engines are 70% (- 10 decibels) quieter than piston engines, a considerable advantage in urban environments; they are also highly secure (very few moving parts, next-to-no vibrations, full redundancy of the DEM system).

Economic respect: the cost of ownership is 20 to 30% lower than that of piston engines (reduced cost of mogas, low maintenance, 3000-hours target TBO, higher payload).

Early 2010 is the target to obtain FAA-type certification for MISTRAL’s lead engine, the 300 hp, normally aspirated G-300. This will be immediately followed by that of MISTRAL’s entire engine line as well as by EASA certification.

Having grown from 3 to 24 employees, Philippe Durr, MISTRAL’s new CEO, has taken the lead of a company in full expansion. Ph. Durr has held several senior executive positions in the Utilities and Telecommunications Industries. He is specialised in the set up and management of industrial innovations within the realm of new market ventures. He also has his private pilot’s licence. The combination of Ph. Durr’s professional experience and passion for aviation will enable him to lead the company’s entry into the certified engine market.

MISTRAL targets sales of 1500 units per year within five years. While certification activities are in full swing, MISTRAL is developing its production, distribution and maintenance networks to ensure its capacity to deliver to industrial clients according to the highest quality standards as soon as FAA certification is obtained.

MISTRAL’s multi-fuel, liquid-cooled and electronically-controlled rotary engines are an innovative solution to the motorization challenges faced by General Aviation. Ranging from 200 hp to 360 hp MISTRAL Engines will be available for both aircraft and helicopters. Created in 2001, MISTRAL Engines is an international company with headquarters in Geneva, and a US subsidiary in DeLand, Florida.
